Service
Oriental rug cleaning that respects how it was made.
Hand-knotted rugs from Iran, Turkey, the Caucasus, Central Asia, India, and China — each weaving tradition has its own quirks. We adjust the process to the rug, not the other way around.
What this service includes
Specialty cleaning for hand-knotted Oriental rugs. Cool-water wash, dye-tested before submersion, fibre-appropriate shampoo, flat-dried so the foundation never gets stressed.
- Identification of origin, knot density, and fibre before any water touches the rug

- Hand dusting on a vibrating floor (Orientals can release a surprising amount of grit)
- Cool-water immersion wash, never hot
- Plant-based shampoo formulated for protein fibres (wool, silk)
- Multiple gentle rinse cycles
- Flat-dry in low-humidity room, 48–72 hours typical
- Fringe inspection and binding repair if needed
- Final grooming and pile-direction reset
Our process
How the work actually happens
- 1
1. Identification and condition map
We identify the rug’s likely origin (Tabriz, Heriz, Kashan, Sarouk, Bidjar, Bokhara, Hereke — each has tells), measure knot density, and map condition: any wear, moth tracks, dye fading, foundation breaks, prior repairs. Photographs go into your file.

2. Dye stability test
Some Oriental rugs use vegetable dyes that can run if pH or temperature is wrong. We test each colour with controlled moisture and a damp cloth. If a colour shows movement, we either use a dye-locking pre-treatment or wash that section with extra care.
- 3
3. Hand dusting
Old Oriental rugs hold a lot of dust — we’ve had century-old pieces drop a kilogram of fine grit during this step. Vibration-dusting is gentle on the foundation and far more effective than vacuuming.

4. Cool-water wash
Submerged in cool water with a gentle plant-based shampoo. We hand-agitate the surface with soft brushes, working with the pile direction. Hot water shrinks wool and accelerates dye bleed — we never use it on hand-knotted rugs.
- 5
5. Rinse until clear
Three to five rinse cycles until the water runs completely clear. We finish with a slightly acidic rinse to neutralize any shampoo residue and bring out the natural lustre in the wool.
- 6
6. Flat-dry, groom, return
Pinned flat in our drying room for 48–72 hours. We groom the pile, comb the fringe, and re-inspect every square foot before rolling for delivery.
How we price this
We don’t publish per-square-foot rates because they oversimplify. Price depends on fibre, size, condition, and whether any repair is involved. After we hear from you, you get a written estimate within one business day. The estimate stands unless we find something at pickup that changes the scope — and if we do, we tell you before doing any extra work.
