Service
Wool rug cleaning that preserves what makes wool, wool.
Lanolin, springiness, fibre integrity. Wool is forgiving — if you treat it right. Hot water, high pH, and aggressive scrubbing strip the very things you want to keep.

Our process
How the work actually happens
- 1
1. Why wool needs its own process
Wool has a natural lanolin coating that repels water and dirt — that’s why a well-maintained wool rug stays clean longer than synthetic alternatives. Hot water (above 30°C) and alkaline shampoos strip lanolin. Once it’s gone, the rug feels dry, gets dirty faster, and starts to lose its spring. Our entire process is built around preserving lanolin.

2. Inspection and dye test
We check the fibre under magnification (wool has scales; synthetic does not), look for prior damage, and dye-test every colour. For machine-made wool rugs we also check the latex backing — old latex can crack during a wash and we’ll discuss alternatives if needed.

3. Dust extraction
Wool holds dust deep in the pile. Vibration dusting on our mesh floor releases what a vacuum never reaches. This step alone often takes 30–45 minutes per rug.

4. Cool-water wash
Immersed in cool water — typically 18–24°C — with a neutral-pH plant-based shampoo formulated for wool. We hand-agitate the surface with soft brushes, working with the pile, and let the shampoo dwell for a few minutes before rinsing.

5. Acidic rinse
Wool likes a slightly acidic environment. We finish with a pH-5.5 rinse that neutralizes residual shampoo, locks the dyes, and noticeably restores the natural lustre of the wool. Customers often comment that the rug feels different after this step — softer, more alive.
- 6
6. Flat-dry, groom, return
Pinned flat in our drying room with the pile facing up, 24–72 hours depending on thickness. Once dry, we groom the pile so it sits in the natural direction and brush the fringe gently.
How we price this
We don’t publish per-square-foot rates because they oversimplify. Price depends on fibre, size, condition, and whether any repair is involved. After we hear from you, you get a written estimate within one business day. The estimate stands unless we find something at pickup that changes the scope — and if we do, we tell you before doing any extra work.
